A Divine Engraving

Isaiah 49:16

“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”

I chuckled to myself the other day when one of my students jotted down a message on the palm of his hand. He wanted to make sure that he would remember the time and date, so he wrote with ink on his hand. In Isaiah 49 we are told that God, too, bears some messages on His divine hands. As He reminds Israel of His divine love for them, he ways,

“...I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…”

What an interesting picture! He, the God who chooses to remember our sins no more, also chooses to remember that we belong to Him. In the same way that I carry pictures of my family on my person, as a perpetual sign of my love for them, so God carried our names on His divine Person so that we might always know that we are the apple of His Eye. Thanks, O Lord, for your hands of remembrance! Your graphic sign of affection makes me want to love you more in return.

Song:

As I stand here today
And I think of the way
That some people just don’t understand,
How my Savior in love
wrote my name in his blood,
I’m engraved in the palms of His hands.

I’m engraved in the palms of His hands,
I’m engraved in the palms if His hands,
Washing me from my sins in His own precious blood,
I’m engraved in the palms of His hands.
